Edward Scissorhands
After a sold-out Matthew Bourne's Sleeping Beauty, the British choreographer returns with Edward Scissorhands. A dance spectacle that is loved worldwide and based on Tim Burton's iconic film (1990). This 'cutting edge fairytale' can be seen exclusively in the Royal Theatre Carré.
Edward Scissorhands
A stunning finale, that knocks you sideways
Set to the haunting music of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, Bourne and company New Adventures return to Burton's witty, bittersweet story of a boy left alone in a strange new world. Edward was created by an eccentric inventor. When his creator dies, he is left alone and unfinished – with only scissors for hands. A pale boy whose inhumanity is betrayed by the scissors he has instead of hands. One day, a kind village woman invites him to live with her family. Can Edward find his place in the society that struggles to see beyond his remarkable appearance?
Classical works in a different guise
Matthew Bourne's Twist Sir Matthew Bourne (1960) has an excellent reputation for reshaping classic works. His world-famous all-male Swan Lake was a hit several times. He won two Tony Awards for it: Best Choreographer and Best Director. Other well-known stories with their own twist are Nutcracker!, Cinderella, Dorian Gray, The Red Shoes and Sleeping Beauty. Matthew Bourne: “Never before has the story of Edward Scissorhands been so topical.
In an age where uniqueness and identity are both celebrated and vilified, the story of how we treat those who look different in our communities is as poignant and relevant as it was when the screenplay for the film was written 33 years ago.”
