The impact of microaggressions
Microaggressions in design are subtle problems you experience when interacting with physical or digital interfaces. This creates additional barriers, particularly for minorities and marginalized groups. Depending on factors such as gender, language, or ethnicity, you may experience more challenges in digital environments, causing digital inequality. In the Netherlands, there are between 2.5 and 4.5 million people who experience problems with digital services.
Inclusive designs for everyone
Imagine an online form where, as a woman or member of a gender minority, you have to scroll down a list where 'male' is listed as the default option if your gender is listed at all. The design choices behind these exclusionary interfaces are rarely intentional They often stem from a default mindset that unconsciously influences designers This can create, perpetuate, or intensify harm and exclusion, leading to social inequality .
Design choices for a better future
In this program, we explore how thoughtful design choices for digital experiences can support you as a user and pave the way for future designers. The goal is to develop more inclusive and accessible systems. We also examine how policy has prevented (or failed to prevent) the serious consequences of current design practices in the digital world and how this policy can be improved to address these challenges more effectively. The active involvement of experts by experience is crucial in this regard
