Director Yasuhiro Aoki set his first feature-length anime not in Japan for a change, but in Shanghai. And what a Shanghai! In the near future, humans and mermaids live together harmoniously in the sprawling Chinese metropolis, with a spectacular infrastructure serving both groups.
This animated film is a feast of movement. You see this everywhere, from ChaO's hairstyle made of water to the action scenes. The creators animate 70 percent of the film manually. This contributes to the vivid and unprecedented detail.
Take a dive into the futuristic city of Shanghai. Here, humans and mermaids live together. This world is so detailed that you cannot take it all in at once. Feel free to watch the film again.
Princess ChaO feels overwhelmed in this bustling city. Yet she must find her way through it, for she loves Stephan unconditionally. The film conveys the message that love can bridge differences. Comparable to The Little Mermaid from 1989 and Ponyo from 2008.
The film ChaO won a Jury Prize at the Annecy Animation Festival. The creators are also known for Mind Game from 2004 and Tekkonkinkreet from 2006. See this film at the Kaboom Animation Festival at the Eye Filmmuseum Amsterdam.
