Hopeful adventure
Immerse yourself in a true story about the art of tacking, about hope, and about seeing life as an adventure. For that is exactly what August does, the captain of the famous Amsterdam ship of fools, Azart, which has inspired many people worldwide. Now that August has beached the ship on the other side of the world, it is time to reflect on its joyful history. The cheerful sounds of musicians inspired by Azart will be heard.
Ship of Fools
Azart, The Ship of Fools, sailed the world for 33 years as a floating work of art, bringing merriment and theater. Life artist August Dirks—who lived and worked on the adventure ship all that time—wanted to retrace the VOC route, but in a different way: "Not to steal and slaughter, but to play and share." When he falls seriously ill, the ship sets course for a final (spectacular!) mooring in South America. There, the wondrous story continues to this day, led by a local theater group.
Crown on Azartplein
A number of residents of the Wladivostok building took the initiative to bring the Azart back to Azartplein. In the form of a weather vane on the mast of the building. This makes it the highest point of Java Island. A crowning glory to Azartplein, in the tradition of weather vanes in Amsterdam.
