Oxiea Villamonte on her work and commission: 'I created nine photographs inspired by Katharina von Bora. What really inspired me about her story was how she was perceived and portrayed differently throughout her life, out of self-interest. I wonder how she would have portrayed herself. Would she have chosen the title virgin, temptress, ideal mother, wife, businesswoman, feminist, or intellectual? Was she one or all of these? Inspired by these different names given to her, I created a series of nine self-portraits, choosing subjects that relate to Katharina, our current times, and my own life. Before I began this photo series, I didn't know Katharina's story. Katharina became a woman like other women I wanted to get to know better. Someone like my own mother, who raised me as a single parent and therefore couldn't focus on her own career. I think of all those female artists who don't appear in art history books.'
