Marit Dik

Marit Dik is a visual artist. She alternately works on paintings, graphics and dioramas. Recurring themes in her work are women and nature. In this exhibition, she shows woodcuts. Only women figure in her woodcuts. No existing women, but women who stand for something, as in mythological stories. These stories gave people an idea about the world, about the forces in nature and how to deal with significant events in life.

Dik herself invented the women from this series of woodcuts. Through them, she reflects on issues such as homesickness, war, motherhood, testimony, etc. She places the “protector woman” at the centre, who lets the children take shelter under her cloak.

At the end of May, all loose woodcuts, as well as the extensive work Meebewegen, will be shown for the first time at WG Kunst. The last woodcut, A bird broke the silence, consists of 22 works printed by hand in colour.

A bird broke the silence is the last sentence of a short poem that Dik wrote in response to the woodcuts she has made over the past few years.
