Yamato - The Power of Human Strength

Yamato is a Japanese Taiko drum group from the city of Nara. The drum group has been active since 1993 and has performed more than 4,500 shows in 55 countries since then. On stage are more than 40 so-called Taiko drums, which literally means 'big drum'. To be seen and heard at Theater De Meervaart.

More than 40 Taiko drums

Yamato's largest drum, the 'Odaiko', is made from an enormous 400-year-old tree. This drum is approximately two meters in diameter and weighs 500 kg (!). The other Taiko drums come in various sizes and produce different sounds.

The members of Yamato have trained their bodies to the utmost to play the Taiko drums. Yamato's music is sometimes intense, sometimes sad, sometimes reassuring, and sometimes even comical.

The sound someone strikes resonates with the human heart. The sounds struck by the heart, in harmony with one another, will become 'Hito no Chikara' – The Power of Man.
