About New Amsterdam Level
Nieuw Amsterdams Peil devotes itself wholeheartedly to the chamber music of our time. With inventive programs for various instrumentations, the ensemble is a resident of the Muziekgebouw. This time, the classical combination of violin and piano takes the starting point. The program features the lyrical Violin Sonata by Debussy, a brand-new work by the Brazilian composer and saxophonist Yedo Gibson, a solo piano piece, and a song cycle by Patricio Wang set to Chilean poetry.
Patricio Wang
Patricio Wang, who came to the Netherlands as a political refugee in 1976 and studied here, composed his Ciclo Mistraliano especially for Nieuw Amsterdams Peil, set to poetry by Nobel Prize winner Gabriela Mistral. Wang has been collaborating with mezzo-soprano Winanda van Vliet for half a century. The Frenchman François-Bernard Mâche studied with composer Olivier Messiaen, a 20th-century legend, and, like his teacher, enjoys incorporating birdsong into his music; the piano work Alcyone features, among others, the African whitebrowed warbler.
Outdoor concert
The terrace concerts take place outdoors. Right by the water, the sun can be strong and it can be quite windy, so please be prepared for this. In case of bad weather (rain and/or strong winds), we will move the performance indoors to the Entrance Hall, with a view over the IJ.
