Discover the French melodies of Katrien Baerts
Soprano Katrien Baerts delves into the world of French music with the program "Penser. Aimer. Chanter." She presents French melodies by composers such as Lili Boulanger, Claude Debussy, Henri Duparc, Francis Poulenc, and Erik Satie. This concert explores the paradox that deep emotions are sometimes most palpable when they are suppressed.
Experience love and desire
In the first part of the evening, you'll experience songs by Poulenc, Debussy, Lili Boulanger, and Duparc, together with pianist Cynthia Liem. These melodies explore the many aspects of love and longing. They are sometimes playful, sometimes wistful, or tenderly ironic. Voice and piano work together, shaping the emotion, adding color to the text, and revealing hidden depths. The music is expressive, lyrical, and at times exuberant.
Dive into contemplation with Erik Satie
After the intermission, the atmosphere changes completely with Erik Satie's "Portrait de Socrate," performed with pianist Gerard Bouwhuis. Here, the distinct feeling of the first movement disappears. There's no drama, no grand outbursts. Satie focuses on the essence of attention and presence. The music follows Socrates in his contemplation, his quiet questions, and his steadfastness. What remains is a quiet intensity.
