Mitski is one of the biggest stars of contemporary indie pop. In her music she combines musical styles such as folk, pop, rock and electronica with personal lyrics about themes such as fear, loneliness, vulnerability and one's own inability. Her breakthrough came in 2018 with her fifth album 'Be the Cowboy', which was chosen as album of the year by music media worldwide.

Her songs 'Nobody' and 'Washing Machine Heart' became TikTok hits. With more than one and a half billion views on TikTok and more than two and a half million videos with her music as the soundtrack, she is one of the most popular artists on the social media platform.
