Hartmut Haenchen
Hartmut Haenchen has a special bond with Bruckner, whose symphonies he is now performing all within a three-year period. These concerts consistently yield rave reviews: 'Haenchen’s Bruckner sounds intoxicatingly beautiful under honorary conductor Hartmut Haenchen,' wrote Trouw following the Ninth . And NRC ’s earlier five-star review was equally jubilant: 'Haenchen’s Bruckner is breathless, full of (love) songs. Brass chorales sounded flowing legato, woodwinds welled up like crocuses from the buzzing strings.' Haenchen, who celebrated his 80th birthday in 2023 and conducted his 800th concerto, remains a tireless inspiration for the orchestra.
Bruckner's Symphony No. 5
Anton Bruckner's Fifth Symphony is a marvel of counterpoint. Bruckner's symphonies are often called 'sounding cathedrals,' and this applies pre-eminently to the Fifth : an imposing monument full of overwhelming brass chorales, illuminated by wondrous strings and colored by magnificent woodwind parts. Bruckner himself was very pleased with the work, which he called his 'contrapuntal masterpiece.' A performance of this sounding cathedral is a unique experience.
