A documentary about sleep and music
In collaboration with Het Documentaire Paviljoen, the Grachtenfestival presents the music documentary Sleep (2019, English, 99 min.) by director Natalie Johns. The film follows composer Max Richter and his 8-hour composition of the same name. That composition explores the twilight zone between waking and sleeping, between consciousness and the subconscious.
In the composer's mind
As a chronological guide, the documentary uses an ambitious open-air performance of Sleep in the center of Berlin. Starting from that performance, the film delves into the creative process and the life of Max Richter. In doing so, you gain insight into the thoughts and choices behind one of the most extraordinary compositions in contemporary classical music.
Talk with violinist afterwards
After the screening, there will be a 30-minute talk (in English) with violinist Armen Ksajikjan. He will share his experiences playing music by Richter. You can ask him questions during this. Ksajikjan will also perform at the Grachtenfestival Closing Concert at STRAAT Museum.
