Esmé Quartet: Dvořák and Haydn

What does the Esmé Quartet sound like? The name says it all: the quartet is named after "esmé," the Old French word for "beloved." The musicians will play Haydn's Sunrise Quartet and Dvořák's Thirteenth String Quartet, a wonderful opportunity to hear both masterpieces in one evening. Interspersed with pieces dedicated to the seasons by Kui Dong and Juri Seo.

Esmé Quartet

Four Korean friends founded the Esmé Quartet in 2016 in Cologne. The original violist, Jiwon Kim, left the quartet in 2023, and her place was taken by the Belgian-American musician Dimitri Murrath. Although the ensemble is relatively new, several major venues have already welcomed the musicians, and they performed composer John Adams's work "Absolute Jest" for string quartet and orchestra under their orchestra.

Dvořák and Haydn

After his second successful stay in London, the entire Western world considered Haydn the greatest living composer. His 1796 Sunrise Quartet reveals formal experimentation and a new depth. A century later, the similarity to Dvořák is surprising. World-famous after his years in New York, he created a superior masterpiece upon returning to his homeland with his Thirteenth String Quartet .
