During this concert, the orchestra will pay tribute to one of the greatest American jazz drummers: Art Blakey. Blakey is considered one of the inventors of the bebop drumming style. In November 1959, he and his "Jazz Messengers" performed at the Concertgebouw, with trumpeter Lee Morgan and tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter among his bandmates. A special guest at this tribute is jazz pianist Rein de Graaff: he will perform with the JOC as a soloist and will discuss his personal connection with Art Blakey. The second special guest is young talent Alexia Harpa, who represents the new generation of jazz drummers this evening.
