De Messiah by Händel by BOI AKIH

For this performance, singer Monica Akihary and guitarist-composer Niels Brouwer – who form the core of BOI AKIH – collaborate with violist Saskia Meijs and kora player Sekou Dioubate from Guinea.

This performance of Georg Friedrich Händel's famous oratorio from 1741 is totally non-conformist, but with great respect for the original composition and entirely in keeping with Händel's own working methods. With a specific instrumentation and sound in mind, this versatile Baroque composer was inspired by the craftsmanship and expression of the soloists. He often rewrote his own work if the performance demanded it and was open to change, new ideas and styles.

With their personal musical idiom, BOI AKIH presents a completely contemporary version. The idiosyncratic combination of string instruments forms a beautiful whole, to which Monica Akihary (winner of the Boy Edgar Prize 2023) lends new expressiveness to the classical texts with her flexible and warm voice.
