Danish String Quartet
The Danish String Quartet summarizes its own biography as follows: 'We are three Danes and a Norwegian cellist, making this truly a Scandinavian undertaking. Because we are relatively bearded, we are often compared to the Vikings. However, we only occasionally plunder the English coastline.' The Boston Classical Review believes that there are simply two kinds of string quartets: the Danish and the others. Whoever listens to the Danish experiences what incredibly good ensemble playing actually means, on every level.
Ravel's String Quartet and Nordic tunes
Ravel dedicated his String Quartet to Gabriel Fauré, but wrote the piece under the influence of Debussy. The latter's String Quartet , with all its new timbres, fascinated Ravel. He submitted his own quartet for the Prix de Rome. He did not win it, but was expelled from the conservatory for this act… The public embraced Ravel’s quartet with great enthusiasm. The Danish String Quartet also wrote and arranged music from the North; they are fond of folk music and Nordic tunes.
