Painting workshop The chair as a portrait
Vincent van Gogh used expressive colours and swirling brushwork to capture the essence of his subject on canvas. One example is the ‘chair portrait’ he created of his artist friend Paul Gauguin: a chair with several items on it that symbolise the character of the painter.
In this workshop, you will create a portrait of yourself or someone you know in the same way – with a chair and some small (personal) items. You and the other participants will first view a selection of Van Gogh’s paintings in the museum collection, in which symbolism plays a role, before setting to work in the studio.
