Schokland

Formerly an island in the Zuiderzee, this elongated strip of land was reclaimed from the sea in 1942 and is now surrounded by fields rather than water. Clues to the area's unique island past remain; Schokland being slightly elevated from its surrounding landscape, and its old waterfront wall remaining partly intact.

UNESCO site

Due to its unique status, Schokland was the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Netherlands. Today it's popular with both day-trippers and archaeology enthusiasts, and home to the Schokland Museum where visitors can discover more about the area's fascinating past.
