The Bierkade and Weerwal

The Bierkade (Beer Quay) has a colourful history, in fact the name says it all. In the 17th century, many beer traders were located here. The Weerwal is also a neighbourhood with a rich history. Most of the buildings on the Weerwal have been preserved; a number of them have been nicely rebuilt.

The buildings on the Bierkade were built well before the 19th century. Due to their monumental appearance they have determined the face of the Bierkade over the centuries. The Weerwal also has a number of beautiful monumental buildings. With their playful and characteristic facades these buildings are a feast for the eye. Both the Bierkade and the Weerwal are included in the monument trail. This hiking trail was developed by the municipality of Purmerend in 2011. Would you like to learn more about the historical background of these buildings? Then we would advise you to go on one of the guided city walks.
