Vegabond Amsterdam

Vegabond’s flagship store on the Leliegracht has been a vegan mecca for me ever since I moved to Amsterdam, and now it has a big sister deli store on the Clercqstraat. Every day you’ll find a mouthwatering selection of freshly prepared Ottolenghi-style dishes on offer: slow roasted sweet potatoes with a creamy, tahini dressing, green beans with garlic and chili, tropical summer slaw with grilled pineapple, plus specials such as the ludicrously moreish ‘cheezy kimchi toastie’. Oh, and you do not want to miss out on the incredible cakes and pastries! As if that wasn’t enough, the store is like an Aladdin’s cave for the plant-based foodie: the best vegan ice creams, sweets and candies, the biggest choice of plant-based cheeses and top brands such as Tofurky, Linda McCartney and Follow Your Heart. So, if cruelty-free food is your thing, Vegabond is the place. // De Clercqstraat 48

Paaseiland Amsterdam

With its beach hut vibe and views over the IJ, Paaseiland is the perfect summertime hangout. It’s only 10 minutes by bike from Central Station, but this sandy spot - with its multitude of dogwalkers - will have you feeling far from the madding crowd. Over half of the Pacific-inspired menu is vegan-friendly. Watch the big boats cruising on by while enjoying an oat milk coffee and a slice of banana bread or sunbathe in one of the deckchairs with an açai bowl in-hand. If you need something more substantial, try the insanely good bulgogi-kimchi fries with sweet and sticky soy-based bulgogi pieces, kimchi ketchup and Japanese mayo, or the avocado sourdough, which is taken to the next level with a hearty dollop of pineapple salsa, a tasty recipe the chefs picked up in Mexico.  Paaseiland is open daily throughout the summer (except Tuesdays), but do check social media for updates if the weather is looking dubious! // Westerdoksdijk 707

Bonboon Amsterdam

Even if you’re not local to the Eastern Docklands of Amsterdam, I can assure you that Bonboon - situated on the man-made KNSM island - is well worth a visit. From Wednesday to Sunday, choose from a small but perfectly executed, seasonal menu full of imaginative and flavourful dishes. We feasted on little gem halves topped with handmade vegan ‘ricotta’, served with pistachio pesto and fresh pear, followed by delicately cooked asparagus, ‘meaty’ oyster mushrooms, salty samphire and tofu cleverly baked to mimic the silkiness of poached egg. To finish, order the creamy coconut rice pudding with poached rhubarb and lavender. Go for the warm welcome, good food and fine wines, but stay for the sunset views of the harbour to really get the full Bonboon experience. // Piraeusplein 59

Little Plant Pantry

Little Plant Pantry Amsterdam

The Little Plant Pantry is a zero-waste, plant-based wholefoods store in Oud West. Grab your empty jam jars and those Thai take-out boxes that give you ‘plastic-guilt’ every time you spot them in your cupboard, and go fill them with seeds, nuts, oils, cereals, pulses and spices - you’ll be feeling virtuous in no time! On the shelves you’ll also find select products from small, artisan producers including cakes and treats from Willem Pie, handmade nut milks and cheeses, natural cosmetics, and coconut bowls from Let’s Plant Ahead. There’s even a kitchen serving honest and hearty plant-based food and - in case you turned up unprepared - you can buy reusable containers instore. Shopping is truly guilt-free at LPP. // Bosboom Toussaintstraat 45-H

Wicked Waffles

Wicked Waffles Amsterdam

Wicked Waffles doesn’t need much selling. You just need to know that it serves devilishly delicious vegan and gluten free waffles with a big ol’ bunch of tantalising toppings to choose from: fresh fruits, crunchy toasted nuts, decadent dark chocolate sauce, luscious vegan whipped cream, peanut butter, maple syrup.... I could waffle on but it’s best you just go check it out yourself. Open Wednesday to Sunday, on the beautiful Czaar Peterstraat in Oost. // Czaar Peterstraat 74
