Foodbar 63°'s homely décor and laid back atmosphere make it the perfect space to indulge in Mediterranean cuisine and antipasti over a bottle of fine wine. The five-course chef’s menu is the perfect way to try a bit of everything, or you can order a la carte, choosing from a selection of inventive dishes that change every few weeks. Tasty, simple food and delicious drinks: this is unpretentious dining done very well.
Not an actual hotel, but homely nevertheless: Hotel Buiten is a café and an urban beach – without sand, but with plenty of views over Sloterplas. Developed by local residents and businesses with a dream of reviving a forgotten piece of nature, the stylish pavilion is mainly made of recycled materials and boasts one of the best terraces in Nieuw-West. Rock up for a scenic lunch complete with a local beer or glass of rose or perhaps just some afternoon drinks.
The warm glow of Cedars’ floor to ceiling windows illuminates Westlandgracht each evening, whilst the chatter from the terrace echoes across the water. Inside, the decor is sleek and airy in contrast to the colourful mezze plates and sizzling platters which tear out of the kitchen of this authentic Lebanese eatery. Tuck into an extensive range of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern fare; the fattoush, falafel and kibbeh come highly recommended. And, be sure to check out the selection of Lebanese wines on the menu.
Bar Bistro Bureau
Socialise with friends or network with business associates at Bar Bistro Bureau, a rooftop ‘park’ located on the fifth floor of B. Amsterdam—and with its abundance of potted plants and ivy-covered trellises, it truly is a park. Open for lunch or dinner, the restaurant serves a creative menu with international influences, whilst the expansive rooftop terrace is especially popular for enjoying a glass of wine in the summer months.
The Breakfast Club Sloterdijk
The Sloterdijk Station outpost of The Breakfast Club retains all the essentials that make this brunch chain one of our favourites in the city. With a choice of fluffy buttermilk pancakes, chicken and waffles, breakfast burgers, french toast and poached eggs doused in hollandaise, the menu ensures nobody leaves hungry. There’s also a great rooftop terrace to knock back an immaculately poured flat white on a sunny morning before your train.
Dousing this slightly grey corner of Sloterdijk with a much-needed splash of colour and fun, BRET is a beer bar and restaurant with a spectacular garden rooftop surrounded by its own urban vineyard. Everything about the venue promotes sustainability and innovation, from the hops grown on-site to the structure made from shipping containers. Oh, and they also host some magical club nights, so keep an eye on their music agenda.
Head down to Şerifoğlu for the strongest coffee and the best baklava in town. This delicious sweet treat is made from layers of filo pastry filled with a mouth-watering mixture of walnut, pistachio, hazelnut, coconut and almond. In the café you can enjoy traditional Turkish sweets, pastries and savoury snacks with a hot drink - the perfect lunchtime pick-me-up for sweet tooths.
Quite logically, this magnificent sky bar is located on the 17th floor of the Ramada Apollo Amsterdam Centre. Floor17 describes itself as offering ‘food entertainment’, combining fine dining with an open kitchen, good music and impressive 360-degree panoramas over the city. Head to the rooftop terrace 85 metres up to indulge in sandwiches, burgers and bites with one of the bartender’s signature cocktails in hand - our pick is the pineapple daiquiri.
Sahan is the most talked-about Turkish restaurant in Nieuw-West, offering a delicious menu of Mediterranean sharing plates. We’d recommend starting with a selection of hot and cold mezze dishes without missing the fried calamari and hummus. Then, tuck into some lamb skewers, stuffed aubergine, vegetable stews and a whole grilled fish. Bring a big enough group and wear loose enough trousers and you’ll be able to try the entire menu!
Across the street from Lelylaan Station is Bar Lely, a homely living room-style restaurant with enough space for laptops, a menu full of distinctive drinks and lunch or dinner dishes that are just a little bit different. Running late? Their to-go meals with fresh fruit, yoghurt and granola or finger-licking sandwiches are also very tasty. And for early-evening drinks, the terrace is a lively spot to enjoy a cocktail pitcher amongst friends or colleagues - with bar snacks taken care of.
