Caribbean rhythms. African roots. Hip-hop energy
Before the show begins, an interpreter will be present to calmly and clearly explain how the vibrating belts work. This way, you can enjoy the performance without any worries.
When you purchase a ticket, you can automatically reserve a vibrating belt. Due to limited availability, it's first come, first served. If you have any questions about accessibility or using the vibrating belt, please feel free to contact elisia@backboneconnects.nl.
Physical ode to the power of music
Choreographer and artistic director Donna Chittick weaves Caribbean rhythms, African influences, and hip-hop into a vibrant, multidimensional experience where dance, music, and energy merge. She takes you on a personal journey back to her roots on Sint Maarten, where music is not just something to hear, but especially something to feel.
"We're showcasing the exchange between bodies and sound," Donna explains. "What does music do to your body? To your emotions? What do you do with that energy?"
Lived energy
Four dancers and a singer bring a familiar, culturally ingrained energy to the stage, incorporating the kind of rhythms and movements you know from home, that are ingrained in your body even before you can name them. Soca, konpa, and African sounds emerge from identity, memories, and community. Movements emerge instinctively, fueled by rhythms that resonate with their heritage, memories, and life energy. Music is made visible, tangible, and palpable, in light, vibration, and pure physical expression.
Celebration of Afro-Caribbean heritage
SOUNDS is also a celebration of Afro-Caribbean heritage. It celebrates music as a source of joy, connection, and resistance. The performance echoes the power of generations before, during, and after the transatlantic slave trade, and shows how sound carries heritage, shapes identities, and connects communities.
The performance shows how sound shapes identities and how music moves through time and community. Not as a stylistic exercise, but as a source of meaning, memory, and power.
BackBone makes the experience accessible to both hearing and deaf and hard-of-hearing visitors with vibrating belts, rhythmic light and moving vibrations: music as a universal language.
