A story about women, secrets, and survival
In Volver, you follow three generations of women from a small community in La Mancha and Madrid. They survive the east wind, fire, madness, and even death — thanks to their determination, their lies, and their zest for life. Director Pedro Almodóvar paints a portrait of female resilience that is both humorous and moving.
Penélope Cruz and Almodóvar's regular actresses
For Volver, Almodóvar brought together his trusted actresses, the so-called 'chicas Almodóvar': Penélope Cruz, Carmen Maura, and Chus Lampreave. Cruz plays Raimunda, one of the two sisters who return from Madrid to the village of their youth to visit their mother's grave.
The past that won't let go
In the village, Raimunda hears from her elderly aunt Paula that their mother Irene is still alive. Other villagers confirm this story. Once back in Madrid, it turns out that the past continues to haunt the two sisters in an unexpected way. Volver is a film about family secrets, reconciliation, and the strength of women who carry on.
