When passion collides with tradition
Not only boys are crazy about football, some girls are too. Dribbling, passing, back heels, chipping, and free kicks: Jesse (Parminder Nagra) can't get enough of it. In her room, the eighteen-year-old high school student has long conversations with idol David Beckham – who looks at her approvingly from the poster. When Jess secretly starts training with a women's team, her Indian parents are in a state of dismay: what has become of their once-respectable daughter? The comedy Bend It Like Beckham lightheartedly satirizes the clash between English and Indian culture; director Gurinder Chadha opted for cheerful music, bright colors, and a pleasant narrative pacing.
