Who is looking?

Central to the work of artist Maksaens Denis (Haiti) is the question of looking: Who is looking? What is being shown and from which perspective? For him, photography and video do not document so much as envelope and disrupt legibility. Denis's work is attentive to social injustice, racism and homophobia. It challenges our gaze and our position as viewer. It seeks to offer new perspectives so we can pay greater attention to the stories of minorities and imagine different ways of living together. He invites us to rethink our relationship with the world and how we might coexist — not through domination or survival, but through recognizing shared vulnerabilities and the solidarity we must build. Artist Maksaens Denis will be present July 11 - 18 and he will have a conversation with curator Charl Landvreugd (SMA) on July 16 at 8PM at Podium Mozaiek about his work.
