Triumph and tragedy of the castrati

For nearly three centuries, the opera stage was dominated by castrati. This high male voice, enforced by castration, was especially popular in southern European countries, primarily because women were prohibited from public performance by Catholic rulers during the early Baroque era. Castrati led to great dramas and triumphs, and to masterful arias like Handel's Lascia ch'io pianga from Rinaldo.
