Trio Da Kali
You could safely call Trio Da Kali a supergroup. Their roots are deeply rooted in their musical heritage. Singer Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté is none other than the daughter and musical heir of Kassé Mady Diabaté, one of the greatest voices Africa has ever produced. Her pure, soulful, and versatile voice is a perfect match for Lassana Diabaté's richly melodic, harmonious, and virtuoso playing on the balafon (22-key xylophone). Mamadou Kouyaté—son of grandmaster Bassekou Kouyaté—lays a beautiful foundation with his bass ngoni. Moreover, his sung harmonies add an extra dimension to Trio Da Kali's sound. 'Da kali' means 'to make a promise.' The trio promises to keep their musical heritage alive, and what better way to do that than by adding new music to it? This year they released their first proper solo album, Bagola , the follow-up to their 2017 hit album Ladilikan with the Kronos Quartet.
Bagola
Bagola showcases the versatility of Trio Da Kali in all its glory. From the lighthearted opener "Bagola ," a critical note aimed at Malian men, to the deeply felt "Orpaillage ," a song mourning the ravages of gold mining. This song was conceived in the studio, where the three musicians, along with producer Lucy Durán, felt the creative energy to create new pieces on the spot. Bagola showcases three musicians who deeply inhabit their musical heritage. But at the same time, you hear three musical citizens of the world, inspired by jazz and funk. It's constantly astonishing what musical richness can be created with just two instruments and vocals. Experience it live tonight in the Kleine Zaal!
