The Rosary Sonatas Gunar Letzbor +& Ars Antiqua Austria

With the Rosary Sonatas (1676), Heinrich Biber made violin history. By tuning the violin differently for each sonata, he opened up a treasure trove of new timbres. The fifteen sonatas vividly evoke moments from the lives of Christ and Mary. Gunar Letzbor—one of the world's greatest Biber interpreters—guides Ars Antiqua Austria from Mary's encounter with the angel to the Ascension. A treasure trove of timbres

The sonatas are divided into three movements. In the first five, featuring scenes from Jesus's youth, the music is both sparkling and tranquil. The darkest shades of Biber's palette resonate in the middle five, depicting the tragic death on the cross. For the final movement, Heinrich Biber pulls out all the stops. From the jubilant Resurrection Sonata, he builds toward a grand finale: the impressive Passacaglia for solo violin, written for the feast of the Guardian Angels.
