Sneak preview De Schat van Scharlaken Rackham Students HKU Utrechts Conservatorium

Andriessen’s recently rediscovered composition based on a Tintin album
Sneak preview De Schat van Scharlaken Rackham Students HKU Utrechts Conservatorium
Dates
In 1970, Louis Andriessen composed De Schat van Scharlaken Rackham, a graphic score made on nine meter wallpaper roll. For decades this unusual score was considered lost; only after Andriessen’s passing did it resurface. Thanks to the efforts of researchers, archivists, performers, and HKU teachers, the work can be heard again. Led by Esmée Olthuis, thirty students from HKU Utrechts Conservatorium present a sneak preview. The grand, full re-premiere will take place on 28 June at Mariaplaats in Utrecht , as the closing event of the conservatory’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
De Schat van Scharlaken Rackham is based on the Tintin album of the same name (The treasure of Scharlaken Rackam). The work uses four different notation methods and calls for improvisation, ensemble playing and virtuosity. After the preview, the evening continues upstairs in the Bimhuis. From 20:30, the concert Goede Maten brings together the Instant Composers Pool, Cristina Zavalloni, Gerard Bouwhuis, Heleen Hulst, De Kickers under the direction of Jan Maarten Koeman, and others, in a programme around Misha Mengelberg and Louis Andriessen, with other rediscovered treasures.
