Orlando, a melancholic portrait La Tempête & lecture by Saskia Törnqvist

The French ensemble La Tempête makes its debut at the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ with a concert dedicated to a single composer: Orlando di Lasso. The versatility of this 16th-century composer and the many adventures he experienced inspired artistic director Simon-Pierre Bestion to create a striking sound monograph. Virginia Woolf's novel Orlando also plays a significant role in it. The ensemble effortlessly juxtaposes electric guitars and ancient cornets to convey the music as richly as possible.

The adventurous versatility of Orlando di Lasso

La Tempête doesn't like rules. Artistic director Simon-Pierre Bestion uses modern instruments like the saxophone and electric guitar in his arrangements of Renaissance works. The staging and decoration do the rest. Everything is new, but everything serves the music, which is brought back to life by this approach.

The many faces of Orlando di Lasso

The Flemish Orlando di Lasso worked in Mantua, Milan, and Rome. He traveled through France and England, eventually settling in Bavaria at the court of Albert V. "I will no longer leave my house, garden, and all other good things here in Munich," Di Lasso wrote, but he did struggle with "melancholia hypocondriaca." This lecture, using musical examples, explores the composer's various sides: from deeply religious to sharp, with a constant focus on melancholy, the mood cultivated at many European courts.
