The Mind the Gap! Festival focuses on diversity and the changing world of classical music. The focus is on composers of color working in Europe and America, past and present. The Concertgebouw Orchestra performs music by Black American composers, including William Dawson, at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. Antony Hermus conducts, Davóne Tines sings Jerome Kern's 'Old Man River', among others, and solo trumpeter Miro Petkov performs as soloist in Wynton Marsalis' spectacular 'Trumpet Concerto'.

Nabors, Dawson and Marsalis

The Concertgebouw Orchestra performs the Dutch premiere of the rhythmic Pulse by the young American Brian Raphael Nabors, and William Dawson’s expressive Negro Folk Symphony , which caused a sensation at its premiere in 1934. Along with similar successes by William Grant Still and Florence Price in those years, Dawson’s work seemed to herald a more inclusive period for classical music, but that did not happen, and sadly, Dawson would not write any more symphonies. The renowned trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis connects jazz with classical music. In his Trumpet Concerto, we hear a trumpeting elephant, references to the French Baroque, blues, Louis Armstrong, the European-Jewish trumpet tradition, and much more. The soloist is Miro Petkov, principal trumpeter of the Concertgebouw Orchestra.
