Greenwood x Strootman: solo guitar and solo violin

Steve Reich, Bryce Dessner, and new works by Aart Strootman and Jonny Greenwood, stylistically boundary-pushing… André de Ridder conducts the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. They are performing in a sold-out Main Hall of the Royal Concertgebouw.
Greenwood x Strootman: solo guitar and solo violin

Ritual for violin and 68 strings
Alternative pop/rock and modern classical have increasingly grown closer together. In fact, this began with the minimal music of Steve Reich and his kindred spirits in the 1960s. Guitarist and composer Aart Strootman performs Steve Reich's *Electric Counterpoint *, composed in the late 1980s. From Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood comes the overwhelming composition *Horror vacui* . It is an almost ritualistic piece for violin and 68 strings, in which the musicians have much more to do than just bow. This is music for the ears and the eyes, naturally with the dark undertones one might expect from a Radiohead mind.
Pop, minimal, folk, baroque, avant-garde
Bryce Dessner, too, draws from a vast musical pool. Besides being a rock guitarist, he is a composer of multi-style pieces. He combines pop influences and the hints of minimal music—almost self-evident for an American—with folk, touches of Baroque, and avant-garde. A fine example is Garcia Counterpoint, in which Aart Strootman solos on electric guitar. Strootman, well-versed in both experimental pop and minimal music, also brings his own work, specially commissioned for the ZaterdagMatinee and the Radio Philharmonic.
