Great Pianists: Maxim Emelyanychev

Maxim Emelyanychev says he gets twice as much energy at the Concertgebouw. This is thanks to the venue itself and its history. For his evening in the Main Hall, this versatile Spotlight musician chose Musorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and works by Ravel and Rachmaninoff. A special highlight is that Emelyanychev plays on several grand pianos in the Main Hall: different instruments that complement the color and sound of the works he performs.

Maxim Emelyanychev

"If listeners want to clap, just during a movement or between movements of a symphony, that's fine with me." A typical statement for Maxim Emelyanychev, a spontaneous musician and all-rounder. This season, the conductor, keyboardist, and player of the zinc has a Spotlight at the Concertgebouw. In these halls, he experiences twice the energy when he performs: "Just like in a game where you can win extra lives."

Musorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition

With Pictures at an Exhibition, Musorgsky paid tribute to his deceased friend, the painter Viktor Hartmann, in 1874. The chicks, the Tuileries Garden, and an old castle come to life tonight on a French Erard instrument, chosen by Maxim Emelyanychev. He explains: "Erard was one of the most famous instrument makers of the nineteenth century. Musorgsky was a great admirer of French culture, and his palette therefore perfectly suits the tonal aesthetic of an Erard. The action and colors of this instrument are very refined." Before the intermission, he chooses a Bechstein grand piano, beautifully suited to the color palette of Rachmaninoff's music.
