Extending String Quartet: Iran's rich musical heritage

The young Dutch Animato Quartet is attracting international acclaim thanks to its musicians' passionate playing. This afternoon, the quartet, along with Khorshid Dadbeh, will perform a brand-new work for string quartet and the ancient tanbur by Iranian-Dutch composer Aftab Darvishi. Monteverdi's pure harmonies, Dutilleux's night music, and Golijov's baroque bass lines frame this newcomer.

Dialogue between string quartet and tanbur

The tanbur is a stringed instrument over a thousand years old with deep historical roots in Iran. It has evolved over the centuries, with variations in design and playing techniques, but it has always remained a symbol of Iran's rich musical heritage. Kurdish soloist Khorshid Dadbeh is open to experimentation and enjoys improvising. This makes her the ideal tanbur player for Darvishi's new work.
