Felix Mendelssohn
Felix Mendelssohn was born under a lucky star. Not only was he a magnificent composer and pianist, but also an avid athlete, very proficient in languages and philosophy (he even studied with Hegel), and a skilled painter. Even at a young age, Mendelssohn knew how to combine his talent for tender, expressive melodies and sparkling agility with unparalleled compositional craftsmanship. As a young boy, he even rivaled child prodigy Mozart. At seventeen, he composed the overture for *A Midsummer Night's Dream*, music in which the fairies dance and love resounds . Sixteen years later, he wrote more elaborate music for the play. It is beautiful, evocative, and atmospheric music full of love. The 'Wedding March' is still played at many wedding ceremonies.
Shakespeare's Dreams: A Midsummer Night's Dream
William Shakespeare's romantic comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream describes the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors in a moonlit forest, where fairies, elves, and magic run wild. Full of references to classical Greek mythology and brimming with lighthearted humor, it is a layered work. Mendelssohn manages to capture that layering perfectly in his delightful music.
