Highlights from the string quartet repertoire
Together with top musicians and host Camiel Jansen, we explore what makes the recognizable tunes of the great classical masterpieces so beautiful and special. Tonight, you can hear the most famous and beautiful quartet sounds. From Haydn, the founding father of the string quartet, to newer sounds in Langsamer Satz by the German composer Anton Webern. France is represented by Ravel and Debussy, two giants when it comes to colorful music. And, of course, Beethoven cannot be missing.
Karski Quartet
All four of them studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, the string players of the Karski Quartet. Friendship and musical inspiration brought them together, and in 2018 their quartet became a reality. With great energy, they play a broad repertoire ranging from Haydn's music to works from this century. The Karskis derive their name from resistance hero Jan Karski: the quartet strongly believes that every era needs heroes like him.
Host Camiel Jansen
Camiel Jansen was trained as a jazz bassist and has been playing classical piano since his early childhood. He has been composing for as long as he can remember, and successfully so: in December 2025, he was appointed Composer of the Netherlands. His background in jazz, classical, and contemporary music can be heard in his narrative music, which centers on societal themes.
