New Year's Swim

Let's hope that the weather won't spoil this event in 2026. Start your New Year’s fitness regime with a dip in the sea at Zandvoort aan Zee on  January 1. This tradition is in its 60th year and attracts brave swimmers from all around the Netherlands. There were plenty of brave divers rushing into the sea, even more fun was that friends and family were there to cheer them on and plenty lifeguards just in case they were needed. Lets hope that on January 1, 2025 it will be such a party again.

National Tulip Day

Every year in January, Amsterdam officially kicks off the tulip season during National Tulip Day. In 2025, National Tulip Day will return to the city for the 12th edition. Dutch tulip growers invite everyone to pick a bunch of tulips for free in a specially created picking garden. A tulip picking garden with 200,000 tulips has been created on Museumplein in Amsterdam. The picking garden will open at 1 p.m. and everyone can pick a free bunch of tulips.

Head of the River

Head of the River will return to the Amstel in March 2026. Rowing competitions are always incredibly exciting, but as the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race in England shows, it becomes even more interesting when rowing is not on a track, but on a river with unpredictable waters. Since the championship was first held in 1933, Head of the River Amstel has become one of the most popular rowing competitions in the country. Lunar New Year

Most of the activities during Chinese New Year traditionally take place on Nieuwmarkt and Zeedijk in Amsterdam, but there are usually also festivities on Dam Square. Chinese New Year begins each year between 21 January and 20 February. In 2026, Chinese New Year falls on 17 February and celebrates the Year of the Horse. Herdenking Februaristaking

In February 1941 tens of thousands of Dutch citizens stopped working and went on strike to protest the persecution of the jews by Nazis in occupied territory. The only general political strike against the anti-Jewish measures of the Nazis, this remarkable act of bravery by people in Amsterdam was swiftly followed by others in Zaanstreek, Kennemerland, Utrecht, Hilversum and Weesp. On February 25th, at the Dokwerker in Amsterdam people will come together to commemorate this special moment in history, and there will be a parade, wreath laying and speeches. The 12th edition of the annual Tulip Festival takes place in April 2026. They will be in public spaces along streets, on bridges and squares, in flower beds and parks, shopping centres and (neighbourhood) gardens.
