Power and destruction

Boris Godunov (1552–1605) strives for power with absolute determination. However, the ghosts of the past catch up with him and he dies insane, abandoned and betrayed by everyone. Meanwhile, Russia sinks deeper and deeper into a quagmire of corruption, coups and intrigues.

Kirill Serebrennikov, a multi-talent in the worlds of opera, theatre and film, surprised in Amsterdam earlier with an unconventional and entertaining reading of Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz . Mussorgsky's serious opera about political chaos demands a different approach. In Serebrennikov's new production of Boris Godunov , parallels with present-day Russia will not be far away.

With the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the direction of the versatile and passionate conductor Vasily Petrenko, a large part of the Choir of the Dutch National Opera and an ensemble of singers of the highest calibre, this also promises to be a musical production. Bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny, praised for his ability to get under the skin of his characters both vocally and technically, makes his role and house debut as Boris Godunov. In addition, several beloved artists return, including mezzo-soprano Raehann Bryce-Davis (previously Ježibaba in Rusalka ), bass Dmitry Ulyanov (previously Prince Galitsky/Khan Konchak in Prince Igor ) and tenor Najmiddin Mavlyanov (previously Calaf in Turandot ).
