Het Nationale Theater / Eric de Vroedt - De seizoenen
Where do you find hope in a world that is upside down? 'The Seasons' is a theatre marathon based on the books 'Autumn', 'Winter', 'Spring' and 'Summer' by Ali Smith (Scotland, 1962). In her sparkling seasonal quartet, the Scottish author interweaves major social changes with intimate personal stories. Director Eric de Vroedt (Rotterdam, 1972) brings her poetic language to life in a seven-hour theatre experience in ITA.

Holland Festival
In the run-up to the performance at the Holland Festival, Eric de Vroedt works with actors (including Theo d'Or winner Mariana Aparicio) and the artistic team on a new part of the book series, with the progress always being presented at the transition to the next season. De Vroedt usually rehearses for two to three months, which makes this method unique. The director has appeared at the Holland Festival twice before with The Nation in 2017 and 2022.
Ali Smith
Ali Smith connects personal stories with social themes such as the refugee crisis, the rise of the far right and poverty. Each book captures the essence of that season, while addressing pressing issues such as Brexit, immigration and the global pandemic. This ambitious project is praised for its topicality and relevance. The Seasons knows how to offer both recognition and emotion, even without knowledge of the books.
