ARTIS-Groote Museum

Embark on a journey past all kinds of interactive installations and discover similarities with plants, microbes and other animals. Alter your perspective with an audio tour and participate in short free meet-ups (workshops). Every Thursday, ARTIS-Groote Museum is open until 10 PM.

What is the ARTIS-Groote Museum?

ARTIS-Groote Museum takes you on a personal expedition, with your body as the starting point. Similarities with plants, with other animals, and even with microbes. Did you know that your intestines do the same thing as tree roots? Did you know that you moved like a crocodile when you crawled across the floor as a baby? Maybe we have more in common than you thought! Come to ARTIS-Groote Museum and explore around you to see how all living things are intertwined.

The building

The Groote Museum was built between 1850 and 1855 for the members of the Natura Artis Magistra Society. It stands on the oldest ARTIS site and was one of the most modern buildings in Amsterdam at the time. The museum, which closed in 1947, has been completely renovated and restored.

The original butterfly staircase has been restored to its original condition, and each glass door has been returned to its original position. As a visitor, you now walk on the same wooden floor that the members of the Society walked on in 1855. A true time capsule that you enter.
