An insight into Moluccan art and culture

Rooted in myth, growing into the future — HAINUWELE Gallery & Studio takes its name from the powerful story of Hainuwele, an origin myth from Ceram, Maluku.

'Hai' means tree. 'Nuwele' means coconut. From a coconut tree, Hainuwele was born — a girl who gifted her community gold, porcelain, coral, and countless treasures. Yet jealousy led to her tragic death. Where her body was buried, new life sprang up: coconut trees and plants essential to the Moluccan people.

As third-generation Moluccan women living in Amsterdam, we feel a deep connection to this story of resilience, renewal, and belonging.Our upcoming pop-up will be a living, breathing artist-in-residency — a space where research, dialogue, and creation intertwine. Through this evolving exhibition, we honor our roots while weaving new narratives for the future.
