Frans Hals Museum (Groot Heiligland)

Since 30 March 2018, the Frans Hals Museum and De Hallen Haarlem have together formed the renewed Frans Hals Museum: one museum at two locations. Here old and new meet. Historical works hang next to contemporary installations and the Golden Age comes together with the present. The encounter between old masters and contemporary art allows you to look differently and see more.

Meet Haarlem’s old, modern and contemporary art

The Frans Hals Museum is Haarlem’s museum of fine art. Home to the world’s biggest collection of Frans Hals’ paintings, alongside works by famous Haarlem artists such as Judith Leyster, Cornelis van Haarlem and Jacob van Ruysdael. And discover also the museum’s rich collection of art from the 1880s to the present day, with works by Piet Mondriaan, Charley Toorop and Rineke Dijkstra.

Come and enjoy Haarlem’s 16th- and 17th-century, modern and contemporary art in two beautiful historical buildings in the old city centre.

Frans Hals

Frans Hals ranks alongside Rembrandt and Vermeer as one of the most famous, innovative artists of the Dutch 17th century. Over the centuries, his vivid, loosely-painted portraits of real authentic people have inspired visitors, and artists too. Famous modern painters such as Manet and Van Gogh came specially to Haarlem to admire his group portraits of civic guards and other pillars of society. View art 2x in Haarlem

Discover the Frans Hals Museum at two historical locations in Haarlem’s centuries-old city centre.

The 17th-century former home for elderly men on Groot Heiligland features attractive galleries, intimate regents’ rooms, an 18th-century doll’s house and a wonderful courtyard. See famous works by Frans Hals alongside other old, modern and contemporary art. Picture yourself centuries ago in the very place where Frans Hals himself may once have walked.

The Frans Hals Museum presents exhibitions of modern and contemporary art at the 17th-century Vleeshal, the former meat market on Grote Markt. The two locations are about seven minutes’ walk apart and one museum ticket is valid for both.
