Garrett Bradley - Revolutions

A vibrant mix of engagement and artistic innovation

Garrett Bradley's work explores how historical images shape our view of the world. She is particularly interested in the way black people in the United States have been represented in the past, and how that influences relationships in today's society.

The exhibition at Eye – which includes narrative, documentary and experimental film forms – shows how Bradley's work is becoming increasingly abstract and sculptural. She invites us to take a step back and consider the question: what are we actually looking at? In doing so, she makes the viewer aware of the pitfalls of representation and unravels the mechanisms that determine how we perceive ourselves and others.

The Revolutions exhibition takes its title from the different forms of revolution that can be found in Garrett Bradley's work. A revolution can be a political change of power, but also a cycle, like the earth turning on its axis and making the days pass. Bradley's work shows the revolutionary potential of the everyday: the change that small acts of resistance can bring about.

In 2023, Bradley won the Eye Art & Film Prize .

Films, Talks & Events

The subsequent film programme will feature almost all of Bradley's work, including the Oscar-nominated documentary Time (2020) and the award-winning short film Alone (2017). A number of Eye on Art specials will place Bradley's oeuvre in context. Finally, films from which she draws inspiration will be shown.
