Augusta Curiel - Yere Mi Sten
Foam presents the first retrospective in the Netherlands devoted to the work of Augusta Curiel (Suriname, 1873-1937). With her sister Anna (Suriname, 1875-1958) as an assistant, she ran a successful photo studio in Paramaribo, making Curiel one of the most important photographers in Suriname. The exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of the work of the Curiel sisters, with more than 100 images that offer a rich cross-section of Surinamese society in the early twentieth century. Augusta Curiel - Yere Mi Sten (translated from Sranan Tongo as Hear My Voice) highlights the multifaceted practice and unique position of Anna and Augusta Curiel in Surinamese society during the Dutch colonial period. The exhibition coincides with the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Surinamese independence.
