Free Heri Heri For All is a national initiative. On July 1, the day of Keti Koti, you can pick up your free heri heri meals at various locations in the city. This is done to reflect on the history of slavery. It is a way of commemorating, acknowledging and connecting. In the Central Station you can go to the I amsterdam Store from 09:00 for your free meal, but when out of stock = out of stock, so make sure you're on time.

Symbol of survival and strength
This project invites people to think about the past together. In this way we work on more awareness of our shared history. Heri heri is a traditional dish. It comes from the time of slavery. It symbolizes survival and strength.
Keti Koti means "broken chains" in Sranantongo, a language from Suriname. On July 1st we celebrate that slavery was abolished in Suriname and the former Netherlands Antilles in 1863. That day is important to remember, acknowledge and celebrate together.
Free Heri Heri For All continues to grow. Not only cultural organizations join as partners every year; also media, institutes and government organizations contribute more and more to the awareness around the meaning of Keti Koti and the importance of the commemoration.
