For whom the bell tolls, for freedom!

At its heart are the four bells of the Zuiderkerk, with the “Freedom Bell” (inaugurated in 2000) as a key source of inspiration. Its inscription reads: “Above all, safeguard Freedom, O Amsterdam, so that it may safeguard you.” The project also refers to F.D. Roosevelt’s 1941 Four Freedoms speech.

Residents of all ages contribute to the freedom cantata Cantica Libertatis, composed for youth choir NVA and ensemble, performed in the Zuiderkerk along with the light and sound installation Frames for Freedom and an exhibition of children's artwork. Leading up to this, street interactions and dialogue gatherings will take place in the Nieuwmarkt neighborhood starting July 12 and continuing through September. The project invites reflection and connection, and is also a tribute to former city council member Auke Bijlsma (1946–2012), initiator of the Freedom Bell.

While most parts of this festival are free to attend, a ticket is required for the closing concert in the Zuiderkerk. Please use the booking link to reserve your place.
