The most famous square in the Netherlands

This audio tour by architour provides an informative picture of the historical and current developments around Dam Square.

Dam Square is perhaps the most famous square in the Netherlands. This spacious open space in the densely built-up city has been an enormous attraction for residents and visitors for centuries. Over time, the most diverse bodies have established themselves around Dam Square. Initially, these were mainly the trading houses next to the City Hall, the Nieuwe Kerk and the stock exchange. Around 1900 the societies and hotels for the wealthy came, followed by banks and insurance companies. A major renovation followed at the end of the 20th century, but the square was swallowed up daily by mass tourism. The importance of the design and use of this public space is now being reconsidered.
