Audiotour op de Dam

Welcome to the audio tour on Dam Square! Chances are you already know this place quite well. But is it self-evident that Dam Square looks the way it does? We take the wide square with its granite pavement, which stretches from the National Monument to the Royal Palace, for granted – but in fact, it is one of the most changeable city squares in Europe. During this tour, you will hear a lot about the development of the square, but also about its buildings over the centuries, the architects involved and the current challenges. Discover Dam Square with architour!

The most famous square in the Netherlands

This audio tour by architour provides an informative picture of the historical and current developments around Dam Square.

Dam Square is perhaps the most famous square in the Netherlands. This spacious open space in the densely built-up city has been an enormous attraction for residents and visitors for centuries. Over time, the most diverse bodies have established themselves around Dam Square. Initially, these were mainly the trading houses next to the City Hall, the Nieuwe Kerk and the stock exchange. Around 1900 the societies and hotels for the wealthy came, followed by banks and insurance companies. A significant renovation followed at the end of the 20th century, but the square was swallowed up daily by mass tourism. The importance of the design and use of this public space is now being reconsidered.

15 striking buildings highlighted

During the audio tour, visitors and residents are taken around Dam Square, past 15 striking buildings. You explore the area in an individual way, supported by a digital map and some current and historical photos per building. At each stop, you can listen to an explanation about the architecture for about 5 minutes, but also about the origins of the institutions and companies. The narrator is a local architect and architectural guide who shares his experience in an accessible yet well-researched way. He knows how to tell a story about every project.

The tour is available for free and is brought to you by BizDAM. All you need is a smartphone with earbuds. The starting point is the Dam.
