Akhnaton

Akhnaton in Amsterdam is a café/hall/society founded by students. In 1953 a number of Catholic students founded a new association: “the Societas Studiosorum Catholicorum Amstelodamensis Akhnaton.” Named after the legendary pharaoh Akhnaten who, like this association, wanted to break with old traditions and customs about 1350 BC. Since that time, the association has been housed in various locations. In 1971 the current buildings on the Nieuwezijds Kolk were moved into.

Party and event location

Akhnaton is a flexible party and event location in the heart of Amsterdam. From the beginning it has been a centre of new music styles from faraway countries and regions, including salsa, reggae, punk and hip-hop. The capacity for parties is 200-300 people, while its café and terrace is open from 12:00 each day.
