Amstel River Cycleseeing Route: river estates and medieval villages

Amsterdam wouldn’t be Amsterdam without the Amstel River. Named after small fishing village Amstelredamme (dam on the river Amstel), built during the 13th century. The Amstel River route follows the flow of the river out of the city. Meandering through Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, Nes aan de Amstel, Uithoorn and Waver.

Cycle route highlights:

De Riekermolen

Down the Amsteldijk you'll find the Riekermolen windmill, built in 1636 to drain the surrounding land. Nearby is a bronze statue of Rembrandt, in honour of the many sketches he made here. De Riekermolen was once used to drain a large plot of land nearby but it now stands as a testament to a bygone era.

Rembrandt Hoeve

Rembrandt Hoeve is a traditional farm specialising in making clogs and Gouda cheese. Located in the middle of the Dutch polder and surrounded by windmills, this farm dates back to the 15th century.

Ouderkerk aan de Amstel is a picturesque medieval village dating from the 12th century. The sights include the Beth Haim cemetery, opened in 1614, the oldest Jewish cemetery in the Netherlands and the St. Urbanus Parish, built in 1872 by the famous Pierre Cuypers, who also designed the Rijksmuseum and Amsterdam Central Station.
