Sarphatipark is located in the heart of De Pijp and is surrounded by numerous spots where you can get something delicious to eat or drink. The grass is generally full of trendy young things getting some fresh air or picnicking and families making use of the play facilities. One hidden gem within the park is the Groen Gemaal (website in Dutch), where you can buy and exchange plants.
Huis van de Wijk Roof Garden
Fancy picking vegetables and herbs from a stunning roof garden? Head up to the roof at Huis van de Wijk, hidden atop a parking garage. The vast green space is full of butterfly plants, vegetables and herbs and is maintained by volunteers - making it a cosy place to meet neighbours and locals.
Along the Amstel
De Pijp is flanked by the broad Amstel River, which winds its way South into some spectacular green countryside. There’s an excellent Amstel River cycle route which passes the ornamental gardens and allotments of Tuinpark Amstelglorie, then heads along the Duivendrecht polder in the direction of the historic village Ouderkerk aan de Amstel. The Amstel is also an excellent spot for rowing, boating or trying your hand at Supping and canoeing. Check out the rental centres at Boaty Rent a Boat or SUP Tropisch.
Berlagebrug Rowing Club
One of the numerous rowing clubs in Amsterdam is Roeicentrum Berlagebrug, directly on the River Amstel which offers classes, private lessons and tours. The jetty at the Berlagebrug Rowing Club is a handy access point for a refreshing swim in the Amstel and you'll find plenty of amenities nearby. This area is a busy stretch of water, so be sure to pay attention to the boats passing by as you're doing those doggy-paddle lengths.
Kinderboerderij De Pijp
Kinderboerderij De Pijp is hidden in a courtyard between a hotel, apartment complex and retirement home. It's a tranquil spot for children to interact with goats, pigs, chickens and rabbits. There’s a great activity programme, and they’ll be able to learn a lot about all of the various animals and plants that are at home here.
